Ahead of its Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Warner Bros. has released the first poster for its upcoming epic, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The film is directed by Guy Ritchie and is the latest iteration of the English legend. In typical Ritchie fashion, expect a rugged, edgy take on the once and future king, portrayed by Charlie Hunnam.
The film follows the origins of Arthur with attention paid to his father, Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana) and his usurping brother, Vortigern (Jude Law). Arthur attempts to avenge his father and ends up locking horns with his magic-wielding uncle. While this may sound like typical swords and wizardry fare, bear in mind who’s behind the camera. We expect a lot of wit and punches served on the side at this meal.
Of course, given the title and poster, King Arthur’s legendary sword Excalibur is a primary focus of the plot. As the story goes, Arthur was raised as an orphan, wholly unaware of his royal lineage until such time as the sword fell into his hands (via Lady of the Lake or by pulling it out of a stone, depending on which version you source). So long as he had the sword he would be exceptionally protected.
The film also stars Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Aiden Gillen, Annabelle Wallis and Djimon Honsou. For an added bonus, David Beckham has a small role as well. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword hits theatres in the UK and US 25 March 2017.
