Kevin Feige Hints at Scarlet Witch’s Mutant Origin

Ever since the merger between Fox and Disney, a lot of Marvel fans have been wondering how the MCU plans to bring in mutants into the main timeline. Though Scarlet Witch was said to have gained her powers through the Mind Stone, Marvel Head Kevin Feige hints that her abilities may come from a completely different origin.

Talking to Empire, Feige talks about how WandaVision will deal with Wanda’s untapped potential. Note his wording:

“If you look at the Infinity Saga, I don’t think any single person has gone through more pain and trauma than Wanda Maximoff. And no character seems to be as powerful as Wanda Maximoff. And no character has a power-set that is as ill-defined and unexplored as Wanda Maximoff… So it seemed to explore that would be worthwhile post-Endgame. Who else is aware of that power? Where did it come from? Did the Mind Stone unlock it?”

The last sentence pretty much backs the theory that Wanda’s powers were her own and not a product of the Mind Stone. That being said, it would be interesting to see how the MCU decides to explore this. With the arrival of mutants marking a major shift in the MCU status quo, everyone is hoping that Marvel will somehow pull it off while making complete sense in-universe.

My personal theory is that they pull inspiration from House of M, but instead of Scarlet Witch taking mutant powers away, she will be the one to unlock it among everyone—making her the mother of the MCU mutants. It would establish Wanda is a powerful mutant, while at the same time make her a key figure in the MCU.

Then again, this is just speculation, but fingers crossed Marvel has a better idea.

WandaVision hits Disney+ on Jan. 15, 2021.
