With the inclusion of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman and at least one trip to Metropolis, Supergirl season two is pulling no punches in its further exploration of the Man of Steel’s mythos. As TV Line has revealed, the show has just cast its Lena Luthor, the kid sister of Kal-El’s nemesis Lex. Here’s how Supergirl will depict Lena, according to the site:
“Beautiful, powerful, and enigmatic, Lena arrives in National City on the heels of brother Lex’s incarceration hoping for a fresh start. Lena has taken over as CEO of her family’s billion-dollar-tech company, Luthor Corp, which has been tarnished by Lex’s evil infamy. Her goal? To re-brand the empire as a force for good. Lena wants to be seen as her own person, separate from her brother. Kara is drawn into Lena’s sphere and must determine if she is friend or foe.”
So is Lena really a goodie? It’s hard to believe that any member of the Luthor clan is not at least tempted by the dark side. Perhaps Supergirl‘s Lena will take a leaf out of Smallville‘s book and start as a friend of the hero only to grow into a villain. Katie McGrath’s casting would certainly suggest the villain option, seeing as she is most known for playing another supervillainess – evil witch Morgana in popular BBC fantasy series Merlin.
This is similar to what The Flash is doing in casting Tom Felton, who is also known for playing a magic-using miscreant in the Harry Potter franchise. We don’t currently know whether he’ll be a bad’un either.
Supergirl flies back to TV (this time on The CW) on Monday 10th October. McGrath joins an increasingly star-studded cast including Lynda Carter as the President of the USA, Ian Gomez as Snapper Carr and Floriana Lima as Maggie Sawyer.
