With every successful movie comes online fan analysis, and K-Pop Demon Hunters has been sparking some fan discussions—specifically covering the lore of the world and history of the characters.
One prevalent fan theory that’s come out is that the demon identity of Rumi’s dad was supposed to be an allegory for sexual assault, hence Rumi being labelled as a ‘mistake’ etc. But thanks to a deleted sequence revealed by artist @tinyfortress on IG, it was revealed that the relationship between Rumi’s parents was actually consensual; and the ultimate moral of the plot point is that demons are capable of love as well.
i KNEW it was forbidden love and not that her dad was gwi-ma or that he forced her mom … poor rumi, carrying all that shame cause of celine not seeing the truth growing up right infront of her eyes – that not all demons are evil ! they were in love your honor😭#kpdh #rumi pic.twitter.com/S8QiOKXD4l

This led to a sigh of relief for some fans (myself included) who weren’t so keen on the idea that being a demon was a metaphor for sexual assault because Rumi has her own romance with a demon in the film—a demon that the movie obviously wants us to root for.
Since this isn’t The Last of Us, a forbidden romance does feel like a plot point that fits very well into the story without having to traumatize the audience. It’s not revealed why the sequence was cut, but for now, at least fans know what the original intention was behind Rumi’s backstory and her parents’ romance.
For now, KPDH is still trending on Netflix, and fans are already hoping for confirmation of a sequel. So far the best they have is hope from director Maggie Kang’s husband Rad Sechrist who confirms that the sequel’s status will depend on the performance of the movie by the end of the month:
