A lot of people may think that Dwayne Johnson may be a one-trick-pony that can only play one kind of character, but director Benny Safdie is going to have him actually do some serious acting with his upcoming film The Smashing Machine.
The movie is set to be a biopic about the life of UFC champ Mark Kerr, and we just got our first trailer with the Rock actually pulling off some serious acting. Check this out:
Besides Johnson, the movie is also reuniting him with his Jungle Cruise co-star Emily Blunt who is going to be playing his love interest (again). It also looks like the movie is going to have some actors actually play themselves in the film like former MMA fighter Bas Rutten as well as commentator Stephen Quadros.
Admittedly, I am in the camp that thinks that the Rock is definitely washed up when it comes to the projects that he’s been picking, but like many others, my (people’s) eyebrow got raised when news came out that he was doing an A24 movie directed by a Safdie brother no less.
Some people actually do think that Johnson does have the chops to be a dramatic actor, but I guess the public has more or less just been asking him to be a sexless muscleman in all those action movies. Hopefully Smashing Machine leads to other, more serious roles down the line; give Dave Bautista a run for his money.
Catch The Smashing Machine when it comes to cinemas on Oct. 3.
