When J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm brought Star Wars Episode VII to our screens last year, it was only the tip of the iceberg.
Seeing the successes of Marvel and their continued block of big superhero films, Lucasfilm, along with its president, Kathleen Kennedy, decided to expland Star Wars beyond Luke and Leia. Prepare for lots of new characters and plots, with all of the films interlinking with the main series.
First on the list, we have Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Set before Episode IV, the film will show us the legendary mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. Next up, Alden Ehrenreich will play a young Han Solo in another Star Wars spin-off. This time, the film will focus on the intergalatic hero’s earlier days. Talking to Collider, The Force Awakens director, J.J. Abrams says he wants something very different:
“I gotta say Kathy Kennedy, who’s running it all, she seems to be pushing all the right buttons. There isn’t something that I’d love to see—I guess the one thing I would say is there’s a Knights of Ren story that I think would be pretty cool to tell.”
The Knights of Ren is a mysterious organisation, created after the Galactic Civil War under the command of Supreme Leader Snoke. Amongst their ranks was Adam Driver’s Force Awakens villain Kylo Ren.
The Knights of Ren are an unusual and clever choice for another link-up. So much changes between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. A solid anthology film would slot perfectly in between the two movies.
We shouldn’t get our hopes up too much, though. We were told little about The Knights of Ren in Episode VII. It seems that we’re not going to see any more of them in the next two films. Abrams is also only producing Episode VIII – with little announced about his future with Star Wars.
Lucasfilm would have to tred carefully. We all remember what happened in Episode I, II and III. Perhaps we should leave Hayden Christensen out of it this time. And maybe Jar Jar?
