Jessica Jones might not have a new Netflix season currently in production, but she’s getting a new comic run. The character’s co-creator Brian Michael Bendis confirmed that he and the original team behind the Alias series are reuniting for another run with Jessica. After the success of the show, they’re expecting the comic to reach a whole new audience.
In an interview with IGN, Bendis gave some insight into what is in store for Jessica. He also teased something for the character which will bring the comic universe in line with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Artist Michael Gaydos, co-creator of Jessica, is returning to draw the new comic. David Mack is doing the cover art, the first of which you can see below.
Comic fans last saw Jones in Spider-Man #5, but the new series won’t be picking up from there. She’s coming into this series in a much different place, and it doesn’t sound like things are going well for her:
“You’re going to find out about it in the first issue. We’re going to open up a book where Jessica’s world has blown up in her face. She’s at a place you’ll least expect her. You’re going to find all of her relationships have altered. And we’re slowly going to find out why. I do like writing Jessica where we have to figure out why this has happened.”
While the success of the Netflix series did play a part, it’s not completely behind the timing. The series could have been done earlier, but Bendis wanted to reunite his original team:
“I’ve worked with other artists on Jessica and always enjoyed it, but in my mind she never looks and feels and breathes and smells more like Jessica than when Michael draws her. Between [Michael’s art] and David Mack, who is one of my closest friends who did all the covers, that is the signature in which people think of her, of those visuals. So having them all back together and having everyone be just a little bit better at their jobs — I think Michael is a better illustrator and David is a better painter — and I have to rise to the occasion and meet them.”
The new run is expected to hit stores this Autumn.
