Jennifer Lawrence has expressed her interest in continuing on as Mystique, according to Empire. Lawrence has been very open about leaving the franchise in the past. Back in March last year, she said that X-Men: Apocalypse would be her last outing as the shape shifting mutant.
But, Lawrence seems to have gone back on that statement in an interview on the Apocalypse set. “I am dying to come back,” she said. “I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it’s not on anyone’s shoulders.”
That doesn’t guarantee her return, but it’s hard to see Fox getting rid of one of the world’s biggest stars. While it could be a misdirect, she could effectively play Mystique in any time period. With the Hunger Games series now wrapped up, will that leave more time for Lawrence to return to the X-Men universe?
The last line of her quote does sound like she is talking about the Hunger Games. Mockingjay 1 and 2 both received mixed reviews from critics. Both films made less at the box office than Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and they both scored lower on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Empire, she isn’t the only star who is talking about a return. They said that James McAvoy talked openly about, “the next one”, hinting he’s coming back as Professor X.
By the sound of Empire’s report, the Fox X-universe is going to get even bigger over the next couple of years. They already have a few standalone films lined up, including sequels to Deadpool and The Wolverine. On top of that, they are also trying to get Gambit off the ground. It sounds like we could get an Apocalypse sequel, or possibly a spin-off, in a few years time as well.
Assuming she does come back, where would you like to see Lawrence’s Mystique show up next?
