A lot of people have bashed the Star Wars Holiday Special for being notoriously terrible, but Lucasfilm and Disney have brought it back with The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special back in November. What’s interesting is, it looks like Marvel is going to be taking leaf out of Lucasfilm’s book with a holiday special for Guardians of the Galaxy.
As per the Disney’s Investor Day reveals, Guardians of the Galaxy is going to get a holiday special. Director James Gunn also posted:
Even seeing this here makes me laugh. One of my favorite stories ever, which I have bugged @Kevfeige endlessly about over the years. I can’t believe we’re actually doing this. And, yes, I unironically loved the Star Wars Holiday Special as a kid. pic.twitter.com/JjymrARoV7

We don’t have a release date for the special yet, but with Guardians Vol. 3 set to start filming next year, it would make sense for the Holiday Special to release sometime in 2022—that way, it can get people hyped for Guardians 3 when it comes out in 2023.
With Guardians already oozing with Star Wars influence, it’s funny that it should also get its own holiday special. Then again, with the entire theme of the franchise being ‘found family’, a special centered on a family holiday does seem the right fit.
A lot of Marvel news had just dropped today, probably more than anyone was expecting; and though some are surely excited for what’s to come, I can’t help but feel that this is all a bit overwhelming. Hopefully I’m wrong, but we are only seeing the beginning of the potential of Disney+.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is expected to come out in December of 2022, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters sometime in 2023.
