New images have just emerged from the production of Spider-Man: Homecoming, thanks to Looper. These are some of our first glimpses of Tom Holland as the web slinger since his debut in Captain America: Civil War last month. Other images emerged from the set last week focusing on Holland out of spandex as Peter Parker and his co-star Zendaya (Michelle).
Production on Homecoming began June 20, in Atlanta, Georgia, though Holland didn’t arrive on set until June 27. According to Looper, the first scenes filmed included a bus scene as part of a school trip to Washington D.C. While we can only speculate why the plot entails school kids on their way to D.C., at least we know it’s not as part of a field trip where Parker will be bitten and acquire spider-like mutations. Marvel has assured us we’ll be spared yet another iteration of Spider-Man’s origin story.
Looper describes this most recent batch of photos:
“These photos, however, come from the second scene, in which Spider-Man runs alongside a cement truck and jumps onto it. The running scenes reportedly will be completed using CGI, but the action scenes where Spider-Man jumps onto the truck were pure Holland, and not a stunt double.”
Holland notably performed his own stunts in Civil War as well. According to Entertainment Weekly, his gymnastic background and ability to nail the maneuvers on his own is what won over Marvel. He also astounded fellow cast mate Chris Evans (Captain America), who’s no slouch in his own right.
“Holland was fully prepared to do a handspring into the scene, but executives on set started to panic, Evans says. ‘Marvel doesn’t want to see this kid break his neck, so everyone from [the studio] was like, “Don’t! Don’t!” And Joe [Russo] just started salivating, “Just do it!”‘ the actor laughs. ‘And he did it — and stuck it!'”
The ridiculously fit Evans slumps in his chair. ‘Like… he bummed me out.'”
While we wait to see an extended version of Holland’s acrobatics, we’re also anxious to see the film’s first footage. That will likely come when Sony Pictures makes their presentation in Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con next month.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is due in US theaters July 7, 2017, and in the UK July 28, 2017.
