Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was initially aiming for a release in 2020, but after the whole fiasco with James Gunn getting fired, the film had to be put on an indefinite hold. Now things seem to be picking up steam without Gunn as GOTG 3 has found a working title and a start of production date.

As per Production Weekly (via PursueNews), Guardians Vol. 3’s working title is Hot Christmas, and the film is set to start production February 2019. It’s been said that the movie will be using Gunn’s original script for the film, but there will be a few alterations depending on who gets to sit in the director’s chair.

Though I am pretty bummed that Gunn won’t get to finish his trilogy, I remember a time when he didn’t think he was going to direct the third film at all. A lot of people think that it’s unfair for him to be booted out of the project, but maybe it came out for the best. If Gunn was directing Guardians 3, then he wouldn’t have the time to write the script for Suicide Squad 2.

As for Gunn’s replacement, I hope they find someone who is just as adept with sci-fi and character drama. Taika Waititi is a top choice for some fans, but personally, as a fan of his work, I think Thor: Ragnarok was far from his best. Waititi’s work shines best when it’s a lot more grounded to reality like Boy or Hunt for the WIlderpeople; even What We Do in the Shadows seemed more ‘realistic’ than Ragnarok did.

Just a weird pitch, what if they got ex-Ant-Man director Edgar Wright to direct Guardians 3? Just an idea to bury the hatchet, I suppose.

No release date has been set for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but with the production date set, we could be looking at a release sometime in 2022.
