After months of campaigning from fans (and a very angry David Bautista), it looks like Disney is not budging in their decision to fire James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. DC, however, it not letting the opportunity pass, and it looks like they’re in talks with Gunn to work on their own ensemble movie – Suicide Squad 2.
According to The Wrap, Gunn is being courted by WB to take write and direct the upcoming sequel to Suicide Squad. Originally, the project was supposed to have Gavin O’ Connor (Warrior) at the helm, but it was deemed that his plot was too similar to the upcoming Birds of Prey; frustrated that BoP was greenlit before his project, O’Connor then left to pursue his own project, Has Been.
Going back to Gunn and his Suicide Squad, it’s said that he’s allowed to do a completely new take on the team, and it could feature a completely new roster. Though I would think that the roster of Task Force X would naturally keep changing, it would be a shame if Gunn wouldn’t make use of great established characters like Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and even Captain Boomerang. Though the original film gets a lot of hate, I think a lot of people agree that it still had some redeeming qualities.
For now, all we know is that Gunn is in talks, and his involvement is yet to be official. Seeing that he did amazing work with Guardians of the Galaxy, I would like to watch Gunn make an ensemble film of fun characters while at the same time make them emotionally well-rounded.
No release date has been set for the Suicide Squad sequel.
