Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks released the first look at Ghost in the Shell, an adaptation of the manga series by Masamune Shirow.
The Captain America: Civil War actress, Scarlett Johansson, stars as a special ops cyborg who leads the counter-cyberterrorist organization Public Security Section 9. Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche, Beat Takeshi Kitano, Pilou Asbaek, and Kaori Momoi also star in the film.
Production is underway in Wellington, New Zealand, with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directing.
“We are so pleased to be in Wellington to shoot Ghost in the Shell,” producers Avi Arad, Michael Costigan, and Jeffrey Silver said in a statement posted at ComingSoon.net. “The city boasts state-of-the-art production facilities and a rich urban landscape that make it an ideal setting for a sci-fi action film.”
Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, the co-founder of Production I.G, is an executive producer. The animation studio produced the acclaimed 1995 film version and the TV series.
Paramount will be releasing Ghost in the Shell on March 31, 2017. Hopefully for fans of the manga, it lives up to expectations.
