After acquiring the rights to Gears of War in 2014, Microsoft handed the franchise over to The Coalition. The studio is new, but headed by Rod Fergusson, former Epic Games director of production and Gears veteran.
Today, GameInformer announced its exclusive coverage of Gears of War 4 in their April edition of GameInformer Magazine. They have kicked off the month of access with new details about the game’s plot and the characters who are set to guide it forward.
Set roughly 25 years after the events of Gears of War 3, Gears 4 introduces fans to a new cast of characters.
JD Fenix, voiced by Liam McIntyre of Spartacus and The Flash fame, is the game’s primary protagonist and son of series hero, Marcus Fenix. The younger Fenix left home early in life to join the COG militia; however, a yet to be identified incident led to his decision to go AWOL. Players will learn more about the classified incident and JD during the game’s narrative.
Played by the talented Laura Bailey, who gamers will recognize from Infamous Second Son, Uncharted 4, and Tales from the Borderlands, Kait is a survivalist raised by parents who led a group of Outsiders. As someone raised outside of city walls, Kait grew up unfamiliar with the militia and its standards. This makes her the perfect character for players as she too is not fully aware of everything going on, notes Laura Bailey.
Delmont, voiced by Arrow’s Eugene Byrd, like JD, is an ex-COG militiamen. He and JD have been close since boarding school, so when JD joined the militia, Delmont did so as well. This loyalty also led to his involvement in the incident that made both men turn AWOL. In talking with GameInformer, Byrd acknowledged that the friendship between JD and Del grew as he and Liam started bonding — something that should translate well during the game’s campaign.
All three characters will be playable and the game will support two-player couch co-op, The Coalition revealed. More information is to come as GameInformer’s April coverage of Gears of War 4 continues.
