At this point, Jon, Sansa, and Ser Davos have unsuccessfully tried to recruit more forces to fight the Boltons in their attempts to reclaim Winterfell.  Despite their obvious shortage of men to fight at their side, Jon wants to forge ahead and fight Ramsey immediately so that they don’t get more time to make their own forces larger.  Sansa, on the other hand, having developed some superior common sense on her tragic journey to this moment, decides to take Baelish up on his offer to donate the Knights of the Vale the the Stark cause. So, behind Jon’s back, she sends a raven to tell him that she needs his help.

The fact that Sansa keeps this from Jon never quite made sense to me, but if we instead focus on what this could be telling us about her character, we see a Sansa that has decided that she’s going to play her hands very close to the chest.  She’s no longer going to ask for permission if she sees someone making a boneheaded decision, which Jon Snow was pretty much in the process of doing.  She is going to be a woman of action, even if it makes people uncomfortable.  And, for the record, Jon Snow was pretty uncomfortable with it for good reason.  I’m interested to see how this shady, secretive side of Sansa manifests itself for the future war against the White Walkers and in the battle for the Iron Throne.
