Season 1, Episode 2: Kingsroad
Cersei shows empathy to Catelyn. We think.
While Cersei may not have pushed Bran out of a window had her and Jaime’s positions been reversed in episode 1, she also probably saw it as something that couldn’t have been avoided. However, when Cersei goes to a grieving Catelyn as she is holding vigil over a comatose Bran, we see that Cersei is obviously conflicted about hurting another mother’s innocent child. The story she proceeds to tell Catelyn is that of her first born child who died early in his infancy due to fever; from the description of the “black haired beauty”, it sounds like this would have been the only legitimate child of Cersei and Robert. The seed is strong, after all. As Cersei describes the anguish both she and Robert felt at the loss, Cersei wells-up and tells Catelyn that she prays that the Gods return her child to her.
Knowing what we know about Cersei, it’s possible that she’s just paying lip-service to a devastated Catelyn, actually hoping Bran dies, and her and Jaime’s secret with him. But Cersei’s sincerity when she tells Catelyn of her deceased son makes me think that her empathy as a mother – at least in this moment – has put on hold any desire to see Bran die. Or to see another mother in pain.
But yeah, don’t worry, this won’t last long at all.
