This is one part of a special GeekFeed Game of Thrones series feature in which we cover the top 7 moments for 7 original characters leading up to the Season 7 premiere on Sunday, July 16th. If you’re seeing a theme, you are correct.
By the Light of the Seven, we present Cersei Lannister’s top 7 series moments (in chronological order)…
::SPOILERS LIE AHEAD::
Okay, let’s just get the obvious out of the way: Cersei is a villainous, reprehensible, and despicable human being of the highest order. Even if you excuse the undeniable ick factor associated with her shagging her twin brother – which doesn’t make her a bad person in itself, it just makes her gross – there are still a plethora of genuinely awful qualities that make her incredibly easy to hate. Despite this, Game of Thrones has done a great job of giving us fleeting yet memorable glimpses into Cersei’s intermittent humanity. By showing us her devotion to her [often equally terrible] children, and the unfairness of being a woman in the testosterone-fueled land of Westeros, we get to feel surprising flashes sympathy for the Queen everyone loves to hate. And when you eventually pit her against such aggravating, self-righteous, power-hungry religious zealots like the Sparrows, it’s Cersei’s very callousness that we’re eventually able to cheer on.
Like all of the other characters in this feature, there are far more than seven moments that I could have spotlighted for Cersei, but the following paint a pretty accurate picture of a woman driven by spite, revenge, and protecting her family. Except Tyrion.
