Season 6, Episode 8: No One
A Girl defeats A Waif, and reasserts her identity as Arya Stark.
In No One, Arya Stark sees Lady Crane die after treating her wounds, and is pursued to be killed by the Waif at Jaqen’s instruction. After a brutal chase through the streets of Braavos, Arya goes into a hidden room with a candle lit where the Waif can find her. And once the Waif approaches, Arya closes her eyes, extinguishes her candle with a slice from her sword, and presumably kills the Waif. We don’t see it happen, though. Because it was dark in there.
Afterwards, Arya goes back to Jaqen to serve up the Waif’s face as a goodbye present, and he seems kinda surprised to see her alive. He’s like “Atta girl! See? I knew I had it in you. Now you’re no one.” Or something. As we all suspected, Arya is no longer interested in being no one, and she drives the pointy end home by saying, “A girl is Arya Stark of Winterfell. And I’m going home.” Then she snapped in the air and walked away (not really, but she should have).
Now, I don’t think that this was news to any of us watching at home. However, it did mark the end of Arya pretending to be something she’s not. And it didn’t begin in Braavos. It began in Season 1, Episode 10, directly in the aftermath of her father’s death when her hair was shorn and she was told to pretend to be a boy for survival’s sake before heading up to Castle Black. All along the way, she’s had to pretend to be someone else either because she had no choice, or because it was the best way to exact revenge. The irony is that she was only able to find her true identity as a result of wearing many faces, both figuratively and literally.
I wonder whose face Arya will be wearing on July 16th, 2017. We’ll have to tune in to find out.
