Season 2, Episode 10: Valar Morghulis
Arya encounters Jaqen H’ghar again, and learns the YOLO of the Seven Kingdoms.
In this episode, Arya encounters Jaqen H’ghar again after he helps her, Hot Pie, and Gendry escape from Harrenhal (recall the three names?) because she helped to free him from imprisonment. He initially offers to take her with him to Braavos and teach her the ways of the Faceless Men, but at this point she’s still determined to keep her face and find her family instead. He then hands her a coin that he says will lead her to him should she ever hand it to a Braavosi and utter the phrase “Valar Morghulis” (Every man must die).
“Every man must die” is a saying that pretty much states the obvious in The Seven Kingdoms. And upon hearing this, Arya apparently takes it SUPER literally and opts to make it a reality a few times before finally using her Braavosi coin – and her handy slogan – to get back to Jaqen at the end of Season 4. It was the first time in a long time that Arya had a glimmer of hope that she had a friend beyond the madness that would be waiting for her should she need help. And it would plant the seed in Arya’s head that she may need the help of the Many Faced God to ultimately vanquish her enemies. Even though that goes against everything The Faceless Men believe in, but whatever! The girl has a long list that needs shortening.
