DreamWorks has kind of coasted for years on their established franchises from How to Train Your Dragon to Shrek, but now it looks like the animation studio is going to be launching a whole new IP.
According to @HollywoodHandle, DreamWorks just announced their new movie called Forgotten Island, and it’s said to be a “a broad party comedy adventure that transports the film’s protagonists to a long forgotten, magical island rooted in Philippine mythology”
The movie is being directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado who had both teamed up with DreamWorks for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The movie is aiming for a release in September of next year.
Admittedly DreamWorks hasn’t been as big of a presence as compared to Disney, but they still manage to release some animated movies that turn heads at the box office. Most recently they found success with The Wild Robot, and they seem to have found a new franchise with The Bad Guys.
With How to Train Your Dragon getting remade in live-action, and Shrek 5 incoming, it’s great to see that DreamWorks still has room for some original IP. We don’t know what it looks like yet, but seeing as how The Last Wish was able to resonate on so many levels, we should hope that Forgotten Island will hit the same kind of spots when it comes to cinemas.
I’m sure Filipinos will eat that shit up though.
Forgotten Island is set to come out in theaters on Sept. 25, 2026.
