First Look at FX’s What We Do in the Shadows Series

Back in 2014, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement released What We Do in the Shadows, a mockumentary film about vampires living in modern-day Wellington, New Zealand. FX had decided to repurpose the premise for an American audience, and now we have our first look at the What We Do in the Shadows series.

Check it out:

What We Do in the Shadows is a half-hour comedy series based on the feature film of the same name by co-creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Set in New York City, the show follows three vampires who have been roommates for hundreds and hundreds of years. Stars Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillen, and Mark Proksch.

It’s unclear whether this show will take place in the same universe as the original What We Do in the Shadows, but the premise about vampire friends living in the modern times seems to be cut and paste. They even copied the scene from the film where the vampires expect virgins to be brought to their home via one of their familiars.

Here’s the trailer for the original:

If anything, it’s going to be like the American version of The Office. Though it did take some plot points straight out of the UK version, it was revealed down the line that the shows existed in the same universe with Michael Scott (Steve Carell) running into his UK counterpart David Brent (Ricky Gervais). With Waititi and Clement involved with developing the show, I hope we could see Viago and Vlad make guest appearances in this version of What We Do in the Shadows.

No release date has been announced for FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, but the show could come out sometime in 2019.
