After the critical bashing that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice received, many wanted director Zack Snyder as far as possible from Justice League. However, the Watchman director still has his supporters, many of whom want to see him take charge of The Batman, following Ben Affleck’s decision to cut his workload on the Dark Knight’s next solo adventure.
ScreenGeek posted an article pushing the case for Snyder to helm his fourth film in the DCEU. That included a petition backing the Man of Steel director to step in for Affleck, which has almost 5000 signatures. That’s not a huge number when you consider how many people flocked to see this year’s two DC releases, but it’s still quite a statement of support for the man overseeing their cinematic universe.
The petition claims that “Zack Snyder’s commitment to source material, extraordinary visual style, and previous experience in the DCEU makes him the ideal candidate.” They also argue that the combination of Affleck as writer, producer and star alongside Snyder could be ideal, “especially when you factor in the influence Ben Affleck is still going to have on the film’s story and dialogue. The two working together just might make the best comic book film we’ve seen.”
The petition comes in the wake of an impressive list of rumoured replacements that Warner Bros. are considering. According to Forbes, the likes of George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Matt Reeves (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Denis Villeneuve (Arrival). Putting Snyder in alongside those widely acclaimed directors is an odds move, especially as he’s yet to really connect with a DC film. While Affleck’s Batman was a highlight of Snyder’s last directorial effort, Batman v Superman saw the Dark Knight turned in to a gun welding serial killer. Is that really the man who should take control of the rebooted Batman franchise?
With no release date for the film, Warner Bros. have plenty of time to pick Affleck’s successor. The Argo director is set to be heavily involved in the search for his replacement. It remains to be seen what effect this petition will have, but surely they’ll be waiting to see the critical reaction to Justice League before handing Snyder another DCEU film.
