This morning on Xbox Wire, Microsoft announced the cancellation of Fable Legends, the “proposed closure” of the game’s developer, Lionhead Studios in the UK, as well as the closure of Press Play Studios in Denmark.
For over a decade, Lionhead Studios was responsible for delivering the world of Fable to Xbox, with seven games in the series having launched between 2004 and 2014. Fable Legends, announced in 2013, was set to bring the Fable series back as a free-to-play action-role playing game, exclusively for the Xbox One. The cancellation of the title and the possible shutting down of the studio will be felt throughout the industry.
When Microsoft acquired Press Play Studios in 2012, the developer already had a stable of multiplatform titles under its then six-year old belt. Unfortunately, the closure of the studio also entails the canceled development of their fan chosen multiplayer, survival-action game, Project Knoxville.
We would like to extend our best wishes to those at both studios affected by the changes announced today, and the changes to possibly come. All Lionhead and Press Play developers have our gratitude as their award-winning and humbling work has left an indelible mark on the industry and gamers.
