As production for Birds of Prey draws closer, the movie is almost finished casting its principal actors. All the members of the Birds have been cast save for one member, and news has it that the film has finally found someone to play the villain.
As per Deadline, Ewan McGregor is in talks to play Black Mask for the film. Though Black Mask is relatively obscure for the mainstream audience, comic readers will know him to be one of the most sadistic members of Batman’s rogues gallery. In the Catwoman comics, Black Mask literally turned Selina Kyle’s sister insane after killing her husband and force-feeding her his eyeballs.
I don’t know if McGregor’s version will be this sadistic, but at the very best, Black Mask is just a regular crime boss with a mask stuck to his face. Pulling stuff like this could make him one seriously creepy villain, and it would be perfect for him to go against a group like the Birds.
Besides, if this movie is going to be R-rated, why not go all out?
McGregor joins a cast which includes the likes of Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Black Canary), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress), and Rosie Perez (Det. Renee Montoya). So far, the only Birds member yet to be cats is Cassandra Cain, and it’s said that she is supposed to be a 12-year-old girl.
Birds of Prey has managed to assemble an impressive cast; fingers crossed that Cathy Yan pulls off a great film.
