While we thought that the Kenobi series would start shooting this year, there had been a delay to work on the scripts for the series. Now that things are slowly starting to get back in to gear amid the pandemic Ewan McGregor has given us an update on when the Kenobi spinoff is expected to start rolling cameras.

Talking to The Graham Norton Show (via Daily Mail), McGregor confirms, “It’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, I suppose. It’s not all me, but it certainly will be a lot of me, which is good… ‘We start shooting it in March next year.”

We don’t have an official synopsis for the series yet, but we do know that the show is going to be taking place before the events of A New Hope and after Revenge of the Sith. There has also been a rumor going around that the series will not just focus on Obi-Wan, but on Darth Vader as well. It’s possible that the story could involve Vader trying to hunt Obi-Wan down; fingers crossed they have one last duel before the one in the Death Star.

Though the Prequel Trilogy is frequently bashed by a lot of fans, McGregor is admittedly one of the best elements of those films. On playing a younger version of Ben Kenobi, McGregor confirmed that he had to do a lot of research on original Obi-Wan actor Alec Guinness. He shares:

“The fun thing about doing that in the first place when I was much younger was trying to imagine Alec Guinness, how would he play these scenes as a younger guy?

“It led me to watch some of his earlier work, which I had never seen before. Brilliant movies, wonderful films that he’d been in, and I had such a great time studying him in those movies.”

Surely now we’ll see an Obi-Wan that’s closer to Guinness age, but hopefully we also get to see more of the Clone Wars era in flashbacks.

No release date has been set for the Kenobi series, but it’s expected to come out in 2022. The Mandalorian Season 2 hits Disney+ this Oct. 30.
