Why the Ending Song of The Latest Last of Us Episode is Special for Longtime Fans

HBO’s The Last of Us isn’t shy from bringing in actors from the original game like Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, and while it looks like we’ve seen what we can of those characters, the latest episode of TLOU has a small cameo from Johnson that’s a major throwback to the first teaser for The Last of Us Part II.

The episode ends with Abby and her team going back to Seattle, and the song that plays over them is Through the Valley sung by original Ellie actress Ashley Johnson.

What’s interesting is, the song is actually a throwback to the first ever teaser for The Last of Us Part II which came out back in 2016—eight years ago. Check this out:

Some fans actually pointed out that the use of the song is interesting because instead of it being juxtaposed to Ellie, the series implies that the song is now about Abby—which still makes sense since the point of the Ellie/Abby connection is that the two are on the same paths of revenge; and Abby has just put Ellie on hers by killing Joel.

The series has certainly made some changes to the story and shifted characters around, so I’m excited to see what else is new because it’s keeping a fan like me on my toes when it comes to this series.

Catch The Last of Us Season 2 every Sunday on Max.
