The Harry Potter franchise may be done, but J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World continues to trudge along with the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The final trailer had just been dropped for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and it has a scene which hints at the romance between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
Here’s the trailer:
Potterheads will recognize the Mirror of Erised, which has the ability to show whoever gazes into it whatever they desire the most. In the clip, we see a young Grindelwald, and it looks like he’s the projection in the mirror of a young Albus Dumbledore.
In the books, Dumbledore was said to have developed a close relationship with Grindelwald in his youth, but by the time Newt’s story comes in, they would have had the falling out that resulted in the death of Dumbledore’s little sister Ariana. His brother Aberforth was supposed to be in that story as well, but I doubt we’ll be seeing him in the film.
It had been said before that Dumbledore’s sexuality wouldn’t be explored in the movies, but having this simple scene where they connect hands via the Mirror of Erised pretty much drives the message home. No idea if that romance will be emphasized with the middle-aged Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
Catch Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in theaters Nov. 16.
