“This could be It”: Neil Druckmann on The Last of Us Part III Eventually Happening

Fans thought Naughty Dog was ready for a third Last of Us game, but instead their recent announce was for a new IP called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. While fans thought that meant that TLOU Part III would be on the backburner, game director Neil Druckmann hints that maybe they won’t make a third game at all.

Talking to Variety, Druckmann was asked about Part III to which he said, “I was waiting for this question… I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more of Last of Us. This could be it.”

It’s kind of odd that Druckmann would have a change in tune when it comes to Part III, seeing that he had been teasing a third game for the past few years since Part II had released. In Grounded II: The Making of The Last of Us Part II docu, Druckmann said:

“I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept that, to me, is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, yet has this through line for all three… So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”

Even the HBO series, which Druckmann has direct involvement in, it’s speculated that they could go for four seasons—meaning that the series has plans to continue the story after the events of Part II. Of course, we don’t know what happens at that point, but the franchise does seem like it has more of Ellie’s story to tell, seeing that there’s still a lot of loose plotlines from the second game.

For now, ND is gearing up for the release of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet which comes out for the PlayStation 5 sometime in the next few years.
