Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is already set to be a critical and commercial hit after just a few days of release. That’s not bad going for something Disney and Lucasfilm saw as an experiment with the Star Wars brand. Their next stand-alone offering is less risky, a solo outing for Han Solo. That’s going to have more familiar faces than Rogue One, with Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca along for the ride.
Casting Donald Glover to play the young Lando seems like a genius move by Lucasfilm, and the Spider-Man: Homecoming star has now promised that his version will live up to the one we were introduced to on Cloud City. Glover told THR that’s he has been a fan of character since he was young:
It was the first action figure I ever had. I remember my dad giving it to me. I had a Darth Vader one and this one that I lost the cape. The lightsaber came out of the arm, and I ripped that out. I remember Lando really well. He was like the only black guy in space. And he was the cool one. I just realized, he still has to be cool. And cool is an interesting thing.
He also used an episode of Black Mirror to explain how his version may be a little different to Billy Dee Williams’ portrayal:
I was watching Black Mirror, and there’s an episode where they go through time and in the ’50s, there’s a nerd, and by the time he gets to the 2000s, he’s just a hipster. He’s not a nerd anymore. Cool changes depending on the perspective. Also, it’s fun because [the Han Solo movie is set] before [Empire Strikes Back], so he’s still figuring it out a little bit, which is fun.
The Han Solo film is currently set for a summer 2018 release, but after Lucasfilm’s recent Christmas success, we may not see it for two full years.
