Many people weren’t exactly pleased with how villain Dormammu looked in Doctor Strange. Not only was he basically transformed in to Galactus for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his look was nothing like his original comic appearance, which you can see above. We’ve now got a new look at the character in some unused concept art, but is it an improvement?
This new concept art, released by Comicbook.com, shows Strange fighting the giant devourer of worlds. This version looks even bigger than the one we saw in the film, but it doesn’t give him a proper body. This version is very similar to the one seen in the film, who is an interdimensional being who doesn’t take a form.
We already know that the Dormammu we saw in Doctor Strange wasn’t his body, but him reflecting Stephen Strange’s appearance. That’s why Benedict Cumberbatch performed mo-cap for the character and voiced him. This version clearly is an extension of that, as Domammu in this concept art almost looks to be wearing a collar like Strange.
The flaming mouth and eyes could be a nod to his comic look, but overall this isn’t close to the comic character either. Future Doctor Strange films, which are incredibly likely, could give us a more faithful Dormammu. However, this look isn’t exactly what fans had in mind. Of course, there is a theory that he’s being held back for a future Avengers film, given how Strange struggled to last a few seconds against the villain. He’d certainly be a threat for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but we’re not sure many of them would be much use against this kind of threat. Maybe that untitled Avengers 4 is Dormammu taking on the heroes, now armed with the Infinity Gauntlet…
