Doctor Strange joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a few short weeks. The latest hero adds a magical dimension to the Marvel world. By the sounds of things, the film could add quite a few new dimensions, too. Stephen Strange is going to be a big figure in the MCU going forward, and he’s finally been confirmed to appear in the next Avengers film.
Benedict Cumberbatch spoke to Empire (via ScreenRant) ahead of the release of Doctor Strange. As with any Marvel property, discussion turned to the future. The actor was asked about Avengers: Infinity War, and he confirmed that he’d be joining Iron Man and co. in the battle against Thanos:
To get us all together will be quite something. That’s why this character is being introduced, to open up the next chapter… So watch this space to see how that unfolds.
After those quotes, you’d think the character has been brought in to play a key role in Infinity War. In The Infinity Gauntlet storyline, Doctor Strange used his abilities to send the heroes in to space. He’s likely to have a much larger role than watching from a distance in the film adaptation.
Cumberbatch also touched on the filming schedule, as the next two Avengers films are shooting back to back. The Sherlock star said that was due to the, “logistical challenge of aligning his schedule with those of Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany.”
By the sounds of things, there might not be much of a link between the two films as we had thought. It could be two separate, massive blockbusters filmed back to back for scheduling issues.
From Marvel comes Doctor Strange, the story of the world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place — a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange — armed with newly acquired magical powers — is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
Doctor Strange hits theatres on November 4.
