The Star Wars franchise has now gotten so big that their own convention now rivals Comic-Con. While there won’t be a heavy Lucasfilm presence in San Diego, you can expect plenty of reveals when Star Wars Celebration heads to London in the middle of July. It’s even bigger, with future directors in the franchise set to appear.
EW is reports, via The Star Wars Show, that Celebration will see panels from the next three directors in the franchise. While Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards was always expected to promote the 2016 release, we now know he’ll be joined by a few more big names. Episode VIII director Rian Johnson has been confirmed for the convention, joined by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The latter two are directing the upcoming Han Solo standalone.
They’re taking part in a panel on the future of Star Wars on July 17. Joining them are some pretty big names from behind the scenes at Lucasfilm. The EW report notes, “They will join Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Sr. Vice President of Development Kiri Hart, and Star Wars Story Group executive Pablo Hidalgo on the Future Filmmakers Panel for “an informal conversation.'”
We’re bound to get some details on the 2017 and 2018 releases within that panel. There’s also a chance that some of the story group hint at a future beyond the current slate. As things stand, we don’t know what is coming after Episode IX in 2019.
You can see the announcement of the panel in the video below.
The first Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One releases December 16. Episode VIII has been pushed back to Decmber 15, 2017, while the untitled Han Solo standalone has a May 25, 2018 release date. Judging by their current state, Lucasfilm could well hold that one off until Christmas.
