We just recently got our first look at Lie Yifei as the lead in Disney’s live-action Mulan, and now director Niki Caro has given us our first glimpse of the set. Check it out:

By the looks of it, this scene looks like Mulan’s Reflection setpiece where she laments on herself after things go horribly wrong with the matchmaker. To jog your memory, here’s the scene from the original cartoon:

Of course, my guess could be wrong. This could be Mulan lamenting in men’s camp. The hairstyle does look more similar to the one she dons when she infiltrates the camp. I’m also guessing the red robe is the same one from the first-look photo we got yesterday.

I’ll admit, I am a bit catty when it comes to this adaptation because a lot of rumors have been going around about how much the story has been changed. For one, the brute villain Shan Yu has been replaced with an evil witch played by Gong Li, and Mulan is said to have been given special powers to set her aside from the rest of the men.

Here I thought that the message of the original film was that Mulan was able to progress ahead of everyone simply because she had the most spunk and grit. Why take that lesson away in the adaptation?

If anything, I could be worrying over nothing. There’s still a lot we don’t know about this film. Hopefully it still ends up being loved by a new generation of kids. For us millenials, there’s always the animated version.

Mulan comes out March 27, 2020.
