The Defenders’ Mike Colter Dishes on Series’ Villains

The Defenders: The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. The Smartass Detective. The Righteous Ex-Con. The Kid with the Glowing Fist.

We’re all excited for the newest installment of Marvel’s Netflix series, The Defenders, which revolves around the four superheroes introduced in Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. A few of the good guys already know each other; Jessica Jones carried on an explosive affair with Luke Cage, for example. The stitching that holds the group together, sometimes literally, is dedicated nurse Claire Temple. Claire has had interaction with each superhero at this point, but especially Luke Cage and Danny Rand. Claire ultimately is the one who gets them together and helps them see they can help more people that way.

But that’s not all that unites our favorite Marvel heroes. In an interview with TV Guide on the red carpet for the MTV Awards, Mike Colter (Luke Cage) spoke about the villains that each hero has had to take on. “Things that happened to us were basically because of one entity,” he said. He added that “eventually we’ll fight together, or not.”

A look back at each of the individual series’ villains could give us a clue as to who this singular entity is that brings them together. Jessica Jones battles Kilgrave throughout her first season, who we know is connected to Luke Cage via his therapist/girlfriend Reva Connors. Kilgrave had an enthralled Jessica “take care of” Reva after retrieving a USB stick with information pertaining to Kilgrave’s origins. Luke met Reva while incarcerated in Seagate Prison. Seagate is also where he met Shades, a henchman to Diamondback, Cottonmouth and then to Mariah Dillard in Luke Cage. In Daredevil, Matthew Murdoch battles Madame Gao and her blind, drug-making assassins. Madame Gao is also running The Hand in Iron Fist. Kilgrave is dead, but his connections to Jessica and Luke remain. Shades and Mariah are still on the loose, and Madame Gao seems to be basically untouchable.

How will these villains come together to unite our fearless leaders as The Defenders? Guess we’ll just have to wait and watch in August.
