There was a lot of debate going around when black actress Zazie Beetz was cast in the role of Domino in Deadpool 2. What’s interesting is, her role even sparked more discussion when Beetz decided not to shave her armpits when she took on the part.
Talking to Independent, Beetz explains how she came to the decision of keeping her body hair while playing Domino. She says:
“Before we started shooting I actually hadn’t shaved in a bit, just out of… not even having gotten to it. And my boyfriend, if I remember correctly, he was like, ‘Maybe you should keep it’. And I was like, ‘You know what?’ That’s kind of a good idea.’ So I just kept it. And then I sort of tentatively brought it up. Well, not really tentatively, I brought it up.”
It’s worth noting that the controversy about hairy pits for Deadpool 2 has been quieter as compared to the backlash that Wonder Woman received. Apparently, some people insisted that Diana (Gal Gadot), growing up with the Amazons, should have hair in her armpits as compared to the final clean-shaven look.
Either way, Beetz stands by her choice, and doesn’t seem to be taking the criticism too hard. She says:
“It’s interesting how strongly people really do feel about armpit hair on women… They have very, very strong opinions about that. But I felt, you know, like that’s not about me, right?”
That’s about social conditioning and about people’s perception of what women should look like. And, you know, I felt if people got offended by that, that’s not something I really have to worry about.”
For now, Beetz is set to return as Domino in the X-Force movie along with Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin. I think she absolutely nailed the role, and I would love to see more of her come the sequels.
Deadpool 2 is now available on digital and Blu-Ray.
