Critics React Strongly to ‘Doctor Strange’

If one thing separates the DCEU and MCU films, it’s how critics have responded to the movies.  After three offerings thus far, DC hasn’t produced a single one that the majority of critics enjoyed.  Marvel, however, has had an impressive hot streak starting with Iron Man in 2008.  After 13 films, every single one of them has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.  Even more impressive is that of the studio’s last five movies, three of them have aggregated review averages of 90% or higher.

If early reactions for Doctor Strange continue to hold, then the studio will be premiering one of their best reviewed films in the coming weeks throughout the world.  The film, directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme, currently holds an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here are some review highlights for those on the fence about the upcoming tentpole release, courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes.

“An engaging, smartly cast and sporadically eye-popping addition to the studio’s bulging portfolio.” – Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

Doctor Strange is thrilling in the way a lot of other Marvel movies are. But what makes it unique is that it’s also heady in a way most Marvel movies don’t dare to be.” – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly

“A kaleidoscope of weirdness and innovative visual effects successfully introduce the newest Marvel superhero in director/co-writer Scott Derrickson’s brilliantly bizarre Doctor Strange.” – Brian Truitt, USA Today

With 30 reviews already exclaiming approval, it will be interesting to see if such a high score can hold until its November 4th release in the United States.  The odds are in favor of Doctor Strange as Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil War, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Iron Man all hold tomatometer ratings of 89% and over.  Marvel’s track record is impenetrable at this point.  If Doctor Strange wasn’t the movie to turn away critics, then it’s safe to say that the folks at Marvel really have a handle on what they are doing with their brand.  We will find out soon enough if the critics are right about Doctor Strange.
