The original Jurassic World trilogy has been closed, and now the franchise is set to reboot again with a new cast of characters led by Jonathan Bailey and Scarlet Johansson.
With Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) at the helm of Jurassic World Rebirth, a lot of fans are wondering what to expect, and as it turns out, the film is aiming to be a ‘love letter’ to the original 1993 movie—which means it’s also going to be embracing the horror element again.
Talking to Empire, Bailey explains, “It really does feel that it’s welcoming people to really celebrate the original film… It has that wonder and awe, while not being scared to re-inject the thrill and the fear.” Bailey’s co-star Johansson also says, “It hearkens back to the first one… It has a lot of good jump-scares, and the stakes are high.”
Admittedly, though the Jurassic World films did have some scary parts to it, the movies do have a lot less horror elements to them compared to the original movie. Besides the T-Rex attack, I remember shuddering as a kid just thinking about how Dennis Nedry was killed by a Dilophosaurus, or how the only thing left of Samuel L. Jackson near the end of the movie was his decapitated arm. A lot of people also don’t like talking about The Lost World, but the opening is still pretty scary:
Sure the World films had some scary bits, but they were more of action-adventure blockbusters rather than horror for kids.
Will Rebirth bring the genre back? Hopefully Gareth Edwards is up to the task. I do have to say he does love working on tropical set blockbusters, doesn’t he?
Watch out for Jurassic World Rebirth when it comes to cinemas on July 2.
