In the closing scenes of the Deadpool movie, Deadpool revealed Cable would feature in the film’s follow-up. Although the superhero revealed this, we couldn’t be certain that this was actually happening. After all, 20th Century Fox filmed the scene well before they knew if it would be successful. Yet, $783 million later and Collider is reporting the cocky Merc’s second film will feature the Cable.
Whilst we now know Cable will definitely be making an appearance, we’re still in the dark. There’s one huge question, however. How exactly will the studio deal with his complicated backstory?
Deadpool does have a lot of dialogue, but not enough to explain Cable’s long life. So how will Fox keep close to the comic without losing all of the new Marvel fans immediately? In an interview with Collider, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have been talking about how exactly they’re going to do it all. Cue Paul Wernick:
“So with Cable, he’s got such a convoluted past, and such a convoluted origin story that I think we’re going to try to leave that, not mysterious, but there are a lot of twists and turns, cloning and all this stuff where you go, ‘Oh my God. How do we get that across in a two hour movie?’ I think we’re going to distill him down to his essence. It will be authentic and faithful, but it’s not going to include the 18,000 details if you were going to read a Wikipedia page about Cable you’d roll your eyes.”
We have had some pretty heavy backstories. This is especially true with the most recent superhero films. There is a danger when revealing new characters to not go into too much bogged down detail straight away, and the guys are definitely taking the right approach here.
