Ever since the last teaser for Birds of Prey came out, a lot of speculation online has been targeted at villains Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) and Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina) possibly being gay. While we didn’t get an official confirmation, McGregor and Messina give their thoughts on the tension between the two characters.
When asked about the duo being gay by Variety, McGregor said, “It’s very complicated… Their relationship is very much based…there’s a want and a need in there for sure.” Messina also added, “There’s a real love for Anarchy.” McGregor also ended the answer with , “More than likely, yes.”
With the Black Mask being a notorious sadist in the comics, it would make sense for him to be paired up with a masochist like Zsasz. Based on how McGregor answered the question, I have a feeling it’s not going to be outright addressed in the film. Besides, I don’t see the point of keeping it a secret—unless WB is afraid it would hurt the chances of the film.
Personally, I’m all up for an all-out, gay villain. We haven’t really had something like that in a comic book film, and based on what we see in the trailers, I think McGregor could really make the character work.
