Everybody loves a rom-com, right? At the moment, big action movies like Spider-Man and War of the Planet of the Apes dominate the box office. Whilst this is great, the heavy set-pieces can get a bit much. So, for those of us looking for a little calm, StudioCanal’s latest movie The Big Sick makes for a welcome break.
To begin with, this heart-warming film starts out like any rom-com does with a boy-meets-girl plot. Yet, this is where Kumail Nanjani and Zoe Kazan’s movie surprises us. Echoing Aziz Ansari’s Master of None, The Big Sick is full of awkward moments. To add to this, we also have the problems facing Kumail as he goes against his family’s beliefs in dating Emily (Kazan). And, as if this wasn’t enough, Emily then goes into a medically-induced coma.
In anticipation for the movie’s release this weekend, StudioCanal have released three clips featuring the main stars. Check them out below:
Based on the real-life experiences of Kumail and his partner, the film’s writer Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick has all the potential to be a big hit. In addition to this, the movie has a great performance from Ray Ramano. You can see the Everybody Loves Raymond star in the second clip, below.
Finally, StudioCanal have also released a featurette. In the video, Kumail and Emily talk about the real experiences which inspired the movie. The pair also reveal a little bit about what we can expect.
Along with the clips from the movie, here’s the film’s official synopsis:
“Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, THE BIG SICK tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Hunter and Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart. THE BIG SICK is directed by Michael Showalter (Hello My Name Is Doris), written by Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani, and produced by Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, This Is 40) and Barry Mendel (Trainwreck, The Royal Tenenbaums).”
The Big Sick stars Kumail Nanjani as himself, Zoe Kazan as Emily. The film also stars Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as Emily’s parents, Terry and Beth. The movie opens across cinemas this weekend.
