Bethesda Interested in Making Nintendo NX Games

Third party relationships and Nintendo don’t typically go hand in hand. The Big N has had minimal success in the past with titles such as Ubisoft’s ZombiU. However, the cult hit wasn’t enough to bolster Wii U sales, and it eventually wound up on PS4 and Xbox One. Such examples led to other third party publishers turning their backs on the console. Which in turn meant mostly core Nintendo fans were interested in the device. It’s nothing to scoff at, since they’ve kept the hardware afloat. Unfortunately, that may not be enough for the next go round. With official details of the NX impending, gamers are wondering what the next Nintendo cycle will look like. If things work favorably, a Bethesda title could be involved.

Speaking to IGN at QuakeCon, Bethesda Softworks VP Pete Hines said they are looking into potentially developing games for NX. The two companies are communicating “all the time.” It sounds exciting, but that doesn’t mean the house of Fallout is ready to take that plunge just yet. “Obviously we haven’t put anything out there [definitively about the NX],” Hines explained. “It’s absolutely something that we’re looking into and we’ll see what comes of it.”

A venture of this nature isn’t as simple as it may seem. According to Hines, it’s not Bethesda’s decision alone to make. Developing for the NX would be based on the games themselves and developers. IF Arkane’s Prey gets the NX treatment, don’t expect Machine Games’ next Wolfenstein to make the cut.

“The NX is absolutely on our radar and something that we’re looking at, but it’s always a game-by-game, developer-by-developer evaluation,” Hines noted. “Not, we sit back as a publisher and say, ‘We’re going to support the NX.”

The NX is still a massive mystery, though a recent report claims it’s to be unveiled in September. The same report alleges the console is portable, and will attach to the TV via a docking station. Whatever it is, if the folks behind The Elder Scrolls are intrigued, so too should everyone else.
