A Baywatch reboot might not be top of everyone’s must-see list, but there’s no denying that the original TV series was a huge hit. Baywatch aired in syndication for a decade during the nineties, produced by and starring David Hasselhoff as lifeguard Mitch Bucannon. The show also made Pamela Anderson and Yasmin Bleeth into household names.
Now Baywatch is making its way to the big screen in its first full length movie, starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. Baywatch was recently handed an R rating for graphic nudity and strong language throughout, and there are hints of it on display in this new trailer. There’s also Efron in a dress.
Everything points to Baywatch not taking itself too seriously. There are plenty of gags packed into the trailer alone, and for the most part, they’re pretty funny. There’s also a plot, though, which focuses on Efron and Johnson’s characters uncovering a criminal plot that threatens the Bay. To that end, there also seems to be quite a lot of impressive action sequences. It will be interesting to see how the two marry up in this movie.
While Efron and Johnson are the undoubted stars of the movie, Baywatch also features Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario,
Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach, and Ilfenesh Hadera. Hasselhoff and Anderson are also set for cameos. What roles they will play remains unclear, since their original characters are being played by someone else. There’s plenty of the typical beach body shots that Baywatch was always famous for, as well as a great moment when C.J runs in slo-mo; that’s how we definitely know it’s a Baywatch movie.
Director Seth Gordon has experience in comedy, with movies such as Horrible Bosses and TV show The Goldbergs to his name. Meanwhile, Efron has long since moved on from his Disney Channel days and has firmly established himself as a pretty solid R-rated comedy actor. As for Johnson, pretty much every movie he’s in seems to be a hit now. While Baywatch might not be the deepest, most thought-provoking movie to emerge this year, it does look like a whole heap of fun.
