The original Baywatch TV series is a huge part of 90s culture. Big stars such as David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson protected the beach from danger, and of course, who can forget the slow-motion running scenes? So when it was announced that Dwayne Johnson and Zac Effron would be taking lead roles in the updated movie version, many of us thought that this would be a one-off.
Yet, producer Beau Flynn has told Variety that he already has plans for a sequel. This is before the movie even hits cinemas worldwide. Following on from the first movie, Beau said that he’d like Zac Effron and Dwayne Johnson to return. Taken from Variety:
“We have an amazing story already,” Flynn told Variety on the red carpet, ahead of the screening on Monday. “We’re bringing back Shannon and Swift who wrote on the first one, and I know Dwayne would be in, I know Zac and all the girls would be. We just have this really cool idea to put them in this whole new world. We would take it overseas.”
Variety also talked to the cast members and asked them if they’d be up for the sequel. Here’s what Kelly Rohrbach had to say:
“Of course!” said Rohrbach, who takes on Pamela Anderson’s original role in the action-comedy movie. “I couldn’t have asked for a better cast on my first film. These guys are awesome. They’re hilarious, they’re loving, they’re generous. We really were a family and I think that comes though on the screen, as well.”
Seems like full steam ahead for Baywatch 2 then. However, the only factor that could derail the project is the studio. Baywatch will have some fierce competition from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales this weekend. If the movie beats Jack Sparrow’s fifth pirate chapter, a Baywatch sequel will definitely be on the cards.
Baywatch is out in cinemas now.
