We heard a while ago that Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 & 2 would be getting new names. The Russo Brothers made that clear a few months ago, and we were expecting an announcement at San Diego Comic-Con. A week on and now Marvel has released an updated title. Does that mean Infinity War is a standalone movie?
SuperheroHype is reporting that the third Avengers film is now subtitled Infinity War. That has led to many speculating the huge battle against Thanos isn’t going to be as big as originally planned. The film formerly known as Infinity War Part 2 is now simply ‘Untitled Avengers’ film. So we’re still seeing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in May of 2018 and 2019, but the story around the Infinity Gauntlet seems to be changing.
Taking the title of the two part adventure and giving it to the threequel is an odd move. Especially as there is no title for Avengers 4. It suggests that there could be a new threat or different story for that film. The fact that they’re shooting back to back should make us think there’s a link between them, but Anthony Russo already shot that down. When they revealed a name change was coming, Anthony said:
“The movies are very very different from one another. It’s not a part one and part two scenario, necessarily. They’re just two different expressions. I think it creates a misconception that we’re shooting them at the same time.”
So, there is a chance we’re getting a standalone adventure, rather than splitting a full story over two films. Ending a film in the middle of a story and ending with a two hour finale usually feels uneven, as we’ve seen with Harry Potter and Hunger Games.
Of course, comic fans know Infinity War wasn’t Thanos’ big moment with the Infinity Gems. The Infinity Gauntlet series had the mad titan in control of the gems, and the universe. Could that be a possible title? With the films beginning production later this year, it might not be too long before we get that next title.
