Though Groot is limited to saying only one sentence in the MCU, it’s no mystery that he is actually saying other words that only a few characters can understand. Of course, we saw Groot dissolve into ashes by the end of Infinity War. Now, Guardians director James Gunn reveals what Groot was saying to Rocket before he disappeared.
When asked by a fan on Twitter what Groot was saying, Gunn revealed that Groot’s final words were:
“Dad”
After spending the entire movie with Groot just acting like a spoiled teenager, it’s actually kind of heartbreaking to see him get out of his shell and act a bit vulnerable. I’m just curious; if Rocket is Groot’s dad, then what does that make Quill? I mean, he’s just as much of a father figure as Rocket is.
We don’t know how Rocket plans to keep going after the whole fiasco with Thanos. Star Lord’s gone. Gamorra’s gone. So are Mantiss and Drax. The only other Guardian left is Nebula. Though I personally would have loved to see how Peter Quill would handle losing everyone, I think Marvel knows what it’s doing for Avengers 4.
