Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has just confirmed his return to Lucasfilm’s galaxy far, far away.

The filmmaker recently attended this year’s CinemaCon to help promote his upcoming mystery crime film, Knives Out, and after debuting footage from the film during his panel at the event, Johnson let everyone know that he’d be returning to Star Wars soon. According to the director, Knives Out would be his last film before heading back to direct his new Star Wars trilogy.

https://twitter.com/colliderfrosty/status/1113929484934062081

This might sound upsetting to detractors of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Sure, the film may have been nothing short of a commercial and critical success, but a vocal minority continue to call the film an affront, finding offense in its subversion of fan expectations and its attempt at humanizing Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), turning the benevolent Jedi into a jaded hermit. These fans would rather have Johnson kicked out of the franchise more than anything.

However, despite what all the naysayers say, Lucasfilm loved what Johnson did for the franchise. Not only did The Last Jedi introduce so many different new creatures, ships, and elements to the galaxy far, far away, it also added depth to our knowledge about the Force.

The Last Jedi took the franchise to new heights. This is one of the main reasons why Lucasfilm brought Johnson back, this time to work on his own trilogy for the franchise.

What do you think of Johnson’s return? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
