The new round of Star Wars movies have made mega bucks for Disney and Lucasfilm. So, it was only a matter of time the studio started looking at the wider Star Wars universe. As early as 2013, the studio began talks to produce two prequel films, one about Han Solo and one about Boba Fett. The Boba Fett movie is still in very early development. However, after the success of The Force Awakens the Han Solo spin-off has gained a lot of momentum. We’ve had a whole list of actor announcements since early last year and the anticipation is building.
Firstly, we know that Alden Ehrenrich is the young Han Solo. In addition to this, we also have Donald Glover playing the part of Lando Calrissian. The only inkling at the plot so far is that Woody Harrelson is likely to be playing Han’s mentor. Game of Thrones‘s Danaerys herself, Emilia Clark, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge all taking as yet unknown roles in the film. Now, as Empire report, Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that Michael K. Williams will also be featuring in the film.
If you’ve seen US shows The Wire or Boardwalk Empire you’ll be familiar with his work. Williams has also had a role in Steve McQueen’s Academy Award-winning 12 Years A Slave. As with all of Disney‘s productions, everything is top-secret. We have very little idea about the plot or the characters the actors will be playing, so we have no idea who Williams will be playing.
The production is being overseen by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The pair are capable hands, both writing and directing the hugely successful Lego Movie in 2016. As Empire note, the Han Solo prequel is breaking with the current trend of Star Wars films, coming out on May 25th 2018 as opposed to the December releases of The Force Awakens and Rogue One. We’re sure this won’t affect the reception of the film, however. After all, we’ve all been waiting for a Han Solo prequel for a long time.
