3. Hold the Door
In arguably the most heart-breaking moment of the season, Hodor sacrificed himself to save Bran and Meera from the Wights. This moment came coupled with the bittersweet knowledge of Hodor’s origins. Whilst in one of his visions of the past, Bran attempted to warg into present-Hodor, but inadvertently affected the young Hodor, then called Wylis, in his vision. Somehow, Wylis was able to hear Meera shouting to present-Hodor to “hold the door,” and suffered a seizure. He repeatedly shouted the words “hold the door,” which eventually slurred into one word: “Hodor.”
Fans have speculated this means that Hodor spent his entire life knowing what would happen to him in the future, and that he would die holding the door to save Bran. Could it be more heart-breaking?
