Spoiler warning for those yet to see X-Men: Apocalypse

Though X-Men: Apocalypse hasn’t exactly won over as many people as the last few installments of the franchise, one moment that every X-Fan is sure to love is Wolverine’s cameo. It’s a relatively short sequence and it doesn’t really add anything to the overall plot, but hey, we always love to see Hugh Jackman stabbing people with his claws. We’ve got so little left with the character, after all, seeing as Jackman is retiring from the role after Wolverine III.

It is not surprising to hear, then, that the original plan was to feature Logan in a much bigger role than he did in the finished product. Talking to CinemaBlendwriter/producer Simon Kinberg said:

There was always a notion that we wanted Wolverine to be in the movie. We wanted to find a way to feature him in the film, partly because Bryan [Singer] and I love Hugh [Jackman] so much. We love the character, obviously, and he’s such a huge part of the franchise. There were a lot of iterations of how Wolverine would enter and exit the movie. There was a version when he was going to come in at the midpoint of the film and be like the drill sergeant for the kids and take over as their leader. And we felt like that stepped on Jen’s role in the movie and becoming their leader.

While that no doubt would have been great to see, it was probably a good move not to sideline Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. She is one of the main characters of this trilogy of X-Men movies, whereas Wolverine is more like a special guest star.

Meanwhile, Wolverine III is coming along nicely, with cast members such as Elizabeth Rodriguez being confirmed to appear. It is set to arrive in cinemas March 3, 2017.
