As the fallout following Batman v Superman continues to tumble and turn the DCEU in a variety of ways, audiences, critics, and Warner Bros. are looking to Suicide Squad as a possible ray of sunshine. With the film’s first reactions coming in to extreme positivity, the studio seems ready to catapult any and all potential momentum into numerous spinoffs for Task Force X and its villainous members. According to a source via WeGotThisCovered, the recently announced Harley Quinn-helmed spinoff is not the only offshoot the studio is in talks to develop. They’re considering others as well:
“They’re going to do a sequel for sure, and the recently announced spinoff with Margot Robbie has got everyone excited, too, but their plans don’t end there. The studio is feeling very confident in the property. They think it’s going to be a really big hit and they think audiences are going to fall in love with these characters.
I’ve heard more than a few talks of giving some of the other Task Force X members their own spinoffs, and like the Harley Quinn one, these films would open the door for a ton of new DC characters to show up.
The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I’ve been told. They’re also really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but you’re definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come.”
Because Suicide Squad won’t be able to equally service the entirety of the film’s characters, these rumored spinoffs would offer a great way of elaborating on them further. And if Joker gets his own spinoff… Can we get an Arkham Asylum announcement, please?
As always, our excitement must be tamed, since Warner Bros. has confirmed none of this and will surely remain quiet for the foreseeable future. Unless, of course, Suicide Squad is the smash hit everyone is hoping for, and they choose to lay all their cards to take advantage of the presumed hype it will generate.
Which characters would you like to see receive their own spinoff films? How could these branch off into the larger narrative of the DCEU? Tell us your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
